PFHour #9 Recap: The Pets Episode
This week’s episode covered a topic near and dear to many people: pets. The topics ranged from our own pets (JD has four cats, Jim has one dog), medical bills and medical insurance, end of life decisions, as well as several listener calls. Stephanie from PoorerThanYou.com called in to share her tale of pet woe and high medical bills while Baker of ManVsDebt called to ask a poignant medical bill/end of life question.

Posts of the Week
Jim’s post of the week was Frugal Dad’s 122 Money Saving Tips because we can all use a little extra savings this month. As part of a giveaway from All You magazine, readers were asked to give money saving tips and he pulled them together to form a great post. Some of the money saving tips are obvious, some aren’t, fortunately you can read through the list pretty easily and you’re sure to find something you can use.
J.D.’s post of the week comes from Laura at Green Panda Treehouse, who explores the difference between fleeting wants and genuine wants. A fleeting want is something you buy on impulse or that will only give you a moment of pleasure, she says. But a genuine want is something that can actually improve your quality of life. A genuine want is not a need, but it’s something you’ve thought about and aren’t just buying on the spur of the moment. Laura was also kind enough to join us to share her own thoughts about the article, which was very generous of her.
Trivia
Last week’s trivia question was gardening related and the winner will be able to pick their choice of a gardening book from Amazon.com. Charles Darwin is best known for expounding the theory of natural selection. But as a naturalist, he explored a variety of subjects. In his final book, he wrote about this garden helper, saying:
“The plow is one of the most ancient and most valuable of man’s inventions; but long before he existed, the land was in fact regularly plowed and still continues to be thus plowed by [X]. It may be doubted whether there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world, as have these lowly organized creatures.”
Last week’s winner was Robert, congratulations Robert!
This week’s trivia question is pet related of course! The question is: Name the first President to have a pet in the White House. Please send your guess to trivia at personalfinancehour.com and a winner will be selected at random from the correct answers next week!
Good luck!
